MOUNTAINEERING | The Broken Top Trek Has It All! An Adventure You Can't Miss

ANIBAL ROCHETA |

In the Deschutes National Forest in central Oregon stands Broken Top (44.08310°N / 121.6986°W), an inactive volcano that offers an exciting adventure for those looking to combine various outdoor disciplines (hiking, backpacking, climbing, camping), especially if you have limited experience.

Broken Top is a beginner-friendly rock climb. The Northwest Ridge is the easiest route. It takes about 8-10 hours and covers approximately 12 miles round trip with over 3,400 feet of elevation gain.

🛣️THE ROUTE

Several routes are available, all divided into 3 parts: the trail, the base of the mountain, and the final climb to the summit, where you’ll enjoy incredible views of the Three Sisters.

We chose the most popular route: the Green Lakes Trail, about 20 km north toward the volcano from Cascade Lake Highway.

Upon reaching the foothills of Broken Top, we took a short break to hydrate and review the route. We then took the easiest path up: the Northwest Ridge. 90% of the ascent is on foot, followed by a short 12-foot (4-meter) rock climb and an exposed traverse to the summit. The ability to secure/rappel is recommended for the brief but exposed rock ascent and descent.

Permits are required from June 15 to October 15 each year. For more information about this permit click here!

Some sections of the trail have exposed ledges or steep ascents/descents where a fall could cause serious injury. Wearing a helmet and using climbing gear is highly recommended.

A fixed line was set up for safety on the section just before the summit.

Once at the base of the summit, we climbed a 12-foot basalt rock wall, traversed narrow and highly exposed cornices, and finally encountered about 15 feet of rocks to the top.

After enjoying the view from the summit at 9,175 feet, all that remained was the descent. The descent follows the same route—be especially cautious of loose rocks and climbers below.

⛰️MY RECOMMENDATIONS

  • The best time to do this trek is between June and October.
  • Seek the support of an experienced climber, especially for the final summit climb.
  • If you want to take photos or enjoy the view, don’t take too long! You could delay the group.
  • Carry enough hydration and extra food for the ascent.
  • For this trip, we used the MSR HyperFlow Microfilter  ideal for water treatment. Its compact size and ease of use will change the way you travel during outdoor activities. Easy maintenance, no tools needed, filters 3 liters per minute, and includes a Quick Connect bottle adapter for wide-mouth Nalgene bottles.
  • Use the Alltrails app for digital maps (works offline).
  • Mountain weather can change rapidly, so always bring a rain jacket and pants.

The Forest Service implemented a permit system starting in 2021 that affects access to Broken Top. Make sure to check updated information online, as you’ll need to plan ahead to reserve your permit.
