Starting the hike on the Yellow Aster Meadows Trail.
Even though this peak just barely breaks 7,000 feet compared to the nearby giants like Mount Baker, Shuksan, and Larrabee, I consider it one of the most stunning mountain views I've ever seen—and it will be a tough one to top.
Taking a quick break for photos and to hydrate.
🛣️THE ROUTE:
We took the SE Ridge route, a trail recommended for experienced adventurers. You can bring your dog on this path, but it must be on a leash. Personally, I would only bring them up to the camping valley area, as the terrain beyond can be exhausting and even risky for them.
We started our hike on the Yellow Aster Meadows Trail, then continued up to a basin holding several small lakes at 5,580 feet. We set up camp near one of these pristine mountain tarns. The round-trip journey was roughly 12 miles.
We camped near a small mountain tarn with our Mountain Hardwear Direkt 2 Tent.
A moderate level of fitness is required—think being able to jog or bike regularly a few times a week. As I always say, know your limits and don't push too far beyond your capabilities. The hike through the forest is intermediate, but the final mountain section is quite challenging, especially the steep incline.
Some technical gear is needed, including climbing and mountaineering equipment. The path up Tomyhoi starts at the back of the lake we camped by, climbing abruptly up the side toward the summit. We followed cairns until the route became well-defined.

Ascending the final feet with a fixed rope and a prusik knot.
There's a false summit about halfway up—don't give up! Keep climbing through beautiful valleys with spectacular views of Baker and Shuksan to reach the true summit. The final 160 feet are difficult and exposed, but incredibly satisfying.

Reaching the summit rewards you with a unique 360-degree panoramic view. It all feels surreal, sitting just one mile from the US-Canada border. I dare say this is one of the most impressive views I've ever enjoyed in a mountain setting.
