Join Loco por la Aventura for a powerful learning experience on Mt. Hood (Timberline area), where you’ll build the technical foundation needed to safely move in snow terrain and prepare for bigger objectives like Mt. Adams, Mt. St. Helens, and Mt. Hood (South Side route).

This course blends technical instruction, confidence-building, and community—perfect for anyone ready to take their first step into mountaineering.

No prior snow climbing experience required.

This is more than a course—it’s your entry point into the mountains.


🧭 What You’ll Learn

Intro to mountaineering snow skills on Mt. Hood involves learning essential techniques for safe ascent, including crampon and ice axe usage, self-arrest, and terrain awareness.

Training includes real-world application of mountaineering techniques such as steep snow climbing, movement efficiency, and foundational safety systems.

❄️ Snow Travel & Movement

  • Proper footwork for steep, firm snow (névé)

  • Efficient use of crampons

  • Movement and balance with an ice axe

  • Traversing snow slopes safely

  • Kicking steps and controlled ascent

  • Plunge stepping for descent

  • Glissading techniques


⚠️ Safety & Technical Systems

  • Self-arrest techniques (how to stop a fall)

  • Assessing snow conditions and terrain hazards

  • Introduction to roped team travel concepts

  • Basic snow anchor awareness (foundational understanding)


🧗 Technical Awareness

  • Clothing and equipment selection for alpine conditions

  • Movement efficiency and energy conservation

  • Decision-making in changing mountain environments


All instruction is hands-on, guided, and adapted to beginner-level participants.

🕒 Duration & Format

Full-Day Course (8:00 AM – 4:00 PM)

  • Morning: Gear setup + foundational techniques

  • Midday: Movement on snow + skill progression

  • Afternoon: Applied practice + real scenario training

By the end of the course, participants will:

  • Feel confident moving on snow terrain

  • Understand essential mountaineering safety principles

  • Be prepared for beginner summit routes such as:

    1. Mt. Adams

🎒 What to Bring

Participants should bring:

  • Mountaineering boots (compatible with crampons)

  • Warm layers (base, mid, shell)

  • Waterproof jacket & pants

  • Gloves (2 pairs recommended)

  • Hat / beanie

  • Sunglasses & sunscreen

  • Backpack (20–30L)

  • Water & snacks


⚙️ Gear

Participants are encouraged to bring their own gear.

Rental gear is available through Loco por la Aventura BaseCamp for those who need it.
