Join us for a welcoming and accessible Nordic (cross-country) skiing experience at the beautiful Trillium Lake.

A Welcoming, Beginner-Friendly, and Bilingual Outdoor Experience

Step into Oregon’s winter wonderland and discover the joy of Nordic (cross-country) skiing at the beautiful Trillium Lake. This experience is designed especially for beginners who want to learn in a supportive environment, surrounded by community, nature, and bilingual guidance.

You’ll enjoy gentle terrain, breathtaking winter scenery, and personalized instruction that helps you build confidence while exploring one of Mt. Hood’s most iconic snow-covered trails.

🌟 What We’ll Do

This activity is ideal for anyone who is brand new to skiing or wants to refresh the basics. Together, we will:

  • Learn the fundamentals of Nordic skiing: balance, gliding, stride, and safe stopping
  • Practice navigating gentle downhill sections
  • Ski the 4.7-mile Trillium Lake Loop at a relaxed, beginner-friendly pace
  • Rotate through small groups for individualized instruction
  • Discuss winter safety, layering, and how to stay warm and dry
  • Build confidence, connection, and community through the outdoors

No previous skiing experience required — all levels welcome.

Time: 9am to 3pm

Parking Note:
An Oregon Sno-Park Pass is required (daily or seasonal).
Available at Government Camp Chevron, REI, sporting goods stores, and USFS offices.

🚗 Getting There

  • From Portland, take US-26 East toward Government Camp.
  • Trillium Lake Sno-Park is directly off the highway with a plowed parking area and restrooms.
  • Chains or traction tires may be required depending on weather.

🧭 Your Instructor

Sándor Lau – Nordic Ski Leader & Outdoor Filmmaker

Sándor is an Eagle Scout, Mazamas leader, and accomplished outdoor filmmaker with nearly two decades of Nordic skiing experience. He has taught dozens of beginner lessons and is known for his patient and encouraging teaching style. One of his favorite winter memories is a 33-mile ski circumnavigation around Crater Lake.

🎒 What to Bring & Wear

Clothing & Essentials

  • Waterproof jacket and pants
  • Warm synthetic or wool layers (no cotton)
  • Warm hat, gloves, and neck gaiter
  • Wool or synthetic socks
  • Sunglasses or goggles
  • Sunscreen & lip balm
  • Small backpack for layers, snacks, and water

Food & Hydration

  • At least 1.5 liters of water
  • Snacks + a simple trail lunch

⛷️ Required Equipment

All participants will need:

  • Cross-country skis
  • Cross-country ski boots (compatible with your bindings)
  • Ski poles (or trekking poles with snow baskets)

  • Route: Trillium Lake Winter Loop (4.7 miles)
  • Terrain: Mostly flat, gently rolling, groomed winter trail
  • Pace: Easy, supported, and relaxed
  • Bonus: On clear days, expect beautiful views of Mt. Hood
