On the weekend of July 27 and 28, we headed back to Smith Rock for the second year in a row, bringing new climbers into the world of rock climbing.
It was a weekend full of climbing and adrenaline, guided by three experienced climbing instructors, our amazing volunteers, and more than 10 participants who were eager to learn how to climb with us.
Day 1: Exploring Rope-De-Dope
Our adventure began in the iconic Rope-De-Dope area, known for its variety of routes and challenging terrain. With the sun rising over Smith Rock, we gathered with 12 enthusiastic climbers, all excited to dive into the world of climbing.
For many, this was their very first experience on real rock. The day was dedicated to learning the basics from scratch. We started with fundamental skills, including knot-tying, safety protocols, and climbing techniques. Under the guidance of our experienced instructors, participants tackled more than seven different routes—each offering unique challenges and opportunities for growth.
Learning the Basics
Rope-De-Dope proved to be the perfect setting for our introductory lessons. Climbers practiced essential knots like the figure-eight and clove hitch, both crucial for safety and efficiency. Our instructors gave hands-on demonstrations and personalized feedback, making sure everyone felt confident with their new skills.
As the day went on, climbers progressed from easier routes to more complex ones, experiencing the thrill of reaching new heights. The sense of accomplishment was undeniable as participants completed their climbs—many pushing past their limits and discovering their true potential.
Safety First
Safety was a top priority throughout the day. Our instructors emphasized proper technique and equipment checks, ensuring everyone understood how to minimize risks. From learning how to correctly wear harnesses to mastering belay techniques, participants built a strong foundation in climbing safety.
Day 2: Mastering Rappelling and Rescue Techniques
The second day of our climbing weekend took us to North Point, a dramatic spot famous for its vertical cliffs and breathtaking views. Here, our focus shifted from climbing to rappelling and rescue skills—essential knowledge for every climber.
Descending with Confidence
Our morning began with an introduction to rappelling. For many, it was a brand-new and exciting experience. We practiced controlled descents down steep cliffs, learning the mechanics of safe rappelling and the importance of proper gear and technique. With the guidance of our skilled instructors, participants quickly gained confidence, mastering the art of descending safely from high points.
Rescue and Self-Belay Techniques
The afternoon was dedicated to learning rescue methods and self-belay techniques. These skills are crucial for climbers venturing into more demanding terrain or climbing independently. Our instructors demonstrated various rescue scenarios, including how to assist a fellow climber in trouble and how to perform self-rescue techniques.
Participants practiced these methods enthusiastically, gaining valuable hands-on experience in handling emergency situations. The knowledge gained during this session is not only vital for safety but also enriches the overall climbing experience.
A Weekend to Remember
As the sun set on our second day at Smith Rock, it was clear that the weekend had been a huge success.
It was the perfect combination of learning, fun, exercise, and adrenaline.
From the fundamental skills learned at Rope-De-Dope to the advanced techniques practiced at North Point, participants left with a strong sense of accomplishment and excitement for future climbs.
The camaraderie and support among climbers made the weekend even more special, highlighting the sense of community that makes climbing so rewarding.
