MOUNTAINEERING | Mount St. Helens Worm Flows Route

MOUNTAINEERING | Mount St. Helens Worm Flows Route

ANIBAL ROCHETA |

Mount St. Helens is an active volcano and the most fascinating attraction at the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument in Washington.
The hike begins at Marble Mountain Sno-Park.

🛣️THE ROUTE

The Worm Flows route is one of the main paths used during winter. The round-trip distance is approximately 12 miles, and the total time ranges from 7 to 10 hours, depending on your pace and fitness level.

This climb is popular among both beginner and experienced mountaineers. While people climb Mount St. Helens year-round, the most popular season is from late spring to early fall.

This non-technical but strenuous climb is suitable for those in good physical condition who are comfortable navigating steep terrain. Many people train for this climb by doing hikes with 3,000–5,000 feet of elevation gain and distances of 2–4 miles to simulate the mountain’s slope.

OBTAINING A PERMIT

A climbing permit is required year-round for anyone traveling above 4,800 feet on Mount St. Helens. From November 1 to March 31, permits are automatically issued at Marble Mountain Sno-Park or, when open, at the Climber’s Bivouac kiosk. Between April 1 and October 31, permits are limited and must be purchased in advance online at Recreation.gov.

When climbing on snow, every climber must be trained in self-arrest techniques. These skills are essential for winter mountaineering. Other critical skills include understanding avalanche conditions, using avalanche transceivers, first aid, and navigation. Remember: the success of your adventure depends on how prepared you are.

If climbing in winter, pack extra layers to withstand sub-zero temperatures and strong winds.
