MOUNTAINEERING | Castle, Pinnacle & Plummer Peaks - Mazamas Expedition

ANIBAL ROCHETA |

Hello everyone! Today I want to share an unforgettable experience I had last Saturday, June 17th. I joined a Mazamas mountaineering group expedition to conquer three incredible peaks: Castle, Pinnacle, and Plummer. Here are all the details of this exciting adventure.

🛣️THE ROUTE

We began our journey on the Pinnacle Peak Trail starting at Reflection Lakes. Following our itinerary, our first objective was conquering The Castle. We ascended the ridge north of Pinnacle Peak until reaching the Pinnacle-Plummer saddle. The trail was snow-covered at the beginning.

From the Pinnacle-Plummer saddle, we headed west through gentle slopes among trees until reaching the anticipated summit of The Castle. The route to the summit wasn't clearly defined but involved climbing the steep south slope. The ascent required hand use and concentration. Though exposure was minimal, the approximately 100-yard section was a continuous battle (rated as class 3 climbing with some class 2 sections) between physical and mental fatigue. We did a short climb to the summit and then descended using rappel technique with a large rock as natural anchor.

The panoramic views from the summit were simply impressive - a true reward for our effort.

After enjoying the moment and refueling for a couple of hours, we headed to our next challenge: Pinnacle Peak.

Here we faced a short class 3 climbing section to reach the flanks of Pinnacle and access the summit block. We chose a route going upward and right along the flanks. In some sections, we used fixed lines for team safety, which took more time and logistics but reduced our risk on the mountain.

The route we decided to take to reach the summit was up and to the right along the flanks. In some sections, we had to use a fixed rope or fix line to secure our equipment, which took more time and was more logistical, but also meant we were less at risk on the mountain.

As expected, we successfully achieved our second summit of the day with great satisfaction and joy.

Finally came the moment to conquer Plummer, the last peak of our journey. We descended Pinnacle Peak's ascent gully and headed east along the south side of the ridge until reaching the south side of Plummer Peak.

After several hours of hiking, using a fixed rope, and physically and mentally exhausting, we managed to reach the long-awaited third summit of the day, breaking my own record for summits in a day.

On the way back, we used the same path, enjoying every step and reliving the moments of accomplishment and connection with nature we experienced on each of the peaks. Upon reaching the end of this journey, I experienced an indescribable mix of emotions. Fatigue mingled with a deep satisfaction at having overcome the challenges and reached the summits of Castle, Pinnacle, and Plummer. Every step, every effort, was worth the breathtaking views and the sense of accomplishment that accompanied us the entire time.

This expedition with the Mazamas group was more than just a climb. It was an opportunity to connect with nature in its purest form, to push my physical and mental limits, and to share this experience with people passionate about the mountains and the outdoors.

Along the way, camaraderie was essential. We helped each other, shared advice, and encouraged each member of the group to keep going. Trust and camaraderie united us, making us a true mountaineering family.

⛰️MY RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Physical Preparation: Before the expedition, ensure you are in good physical condition. Perform endurance and muscle-strengthening exercises to prepare for the physical challenge of climbing the peaks.
  • Research and Planning: Research and familiarize yourself with the routes and terrain conditions. Obtain maps, guides, and consult local experts to get accurate information about the terrain and challenges you will face.
  • Proper Equipment: Make sure to bring adequate equipment for mountain climbing, including sturdy footwear, weather-appropriate clothing, a helmet, harness, ropes, and other safety gear. Do not forget to carry enough water, energy foods, and navigation equipment.
  • Weather Conditions: Check weather conditions before the expedition and prepare for sudden changes. Bring appropriate clothing to protect yourself from cold, rain, and wind, and stay alert to signs of bad weather during the journey.
  • Safety and Precaution: Always prioritize safety. Do not exceed your technical skills and knowledge. Constantly assess risks, follow proper safety practices, and make informed decisions to ensure your well-being and that of your group.
  • Respect for Nature: Remember that you are exploring a fragile natural environment. Respect local flora and fauna, carry out your waste, and leave no trace. Follow park regulations and contribute to preserving the natural beauty of the area.
  • Continuous Learning: Take advantage of every mountain experience as a learning opportunity. Observe and learn from more experienced climbers, improve your technical skills, and gain knowledge for future expeditions.

I cannot express in words how enriching this experience was. As we hiked the trails, facing challenges and admiring the natural beauty around us, I felt a deep connection with the earth and infinite gratitude for the opportunity to explore these magnificent peaks.

If you ever have the chance to embark on a similar adventure, do not hesitate. Allow yourself to challenge your limits, connect with nature, and live experiences that will leave an indelible mark on your lives.

The expedition to Castle, Pinnacle, and Plummer mountains with the Mazamas group was an exciting chapter in my personal history as a mountain lover. I hope this story inspires others to seek their own adventures and enjoy the grandeur of nature.

Until the next expedition - keep exploring and living life to the fullest!
