At Loco por la Aventura, we believe that outdoor recreation is about much more than adventure.
It is about education.
It is about leadership.
It is about creating opportunities for people to gain new skills, build confidence, and become leaders capable of positively impacting their communities.
While many people know us for our hiking trips, climbing adventures, mountaineering expeditions, and outdoor experiences, education has always been at the heart of our mission.
Every program we offer is designed not only to connect people with nature, but also to provide meaningful learning opportunities that empower participants both on and off the mountain.
This spring, that commitment to education reached an important milestone through a partnership with the Professional Climbing Guides Institute (PCGI), one of the nation's leading organizations for climbing instructor and guide education.

Together, we hosted two intensive Top Rope Guide Certification Courses at Canyonview Ranch Camp in Silverton, Oregon, providing advanced climbing education and leadership training for members of the Loco por la Aventura volunteer team.
Two Weekends Dedicated to Learning
The first certification course took place from April 17–19, 2026, followed by a second session from May 15–17, 2026.
Over the course of these two weekends, 18 Loco por la Aventura volunteers committed themselves to an intensive educational experience focused on technical climbing systems, safety, instruction, leadership, and risk management.

For many participants, this was their first opportunity to receive professional-level climbing education.
For others, it represented the next step in a long-term commitment to outdoor leadership and community service.
Regardless of their previous experience, every participant arrived with the same goal: to learn, grow, and become better equipped to serve others.

Education Beyond Recreation
One of the misconceptions people often have about outdoor recreation is that it is only about having fun.
While adventure is certainly part of the experience, meaningful outdoor programs create opportunities for education that extend far beyond the activity itself.
Throughout both certification weekends, participants engaged in classroom instruction, hands-on practice, technical assessments, and real-world climbing scenarios.
Training topics included:
-
Top rope climbing systems
-
Anchor building and evaluation
-
Rope management
-
Essential climbing knots
-
Risk assessment and hazard management
-
Rappelling techniques
-
Group supervision and communication
-
Climbing instruction methodologies
-
Outdoor leadership and decision-making
-
Professional safety standards and best practices
The training challenged participants physically, mentally, and emotionally.
They spent hours practicing skills, reviewing safety systems, troubleshooting technical scenarios, and learning how to teach others effectively.
Mistakes became lessons.
Questions became conversations.
And every challenge became an opportunity to grow.

Investing in Community Leadership
What makes this achievement particularly meaningful is that all 18 participants were volunteers from the Loco por la Aventura community.
These are individuals who have generously dedicated their time, energy, and passion to helping others discover the outdoors.
Recognizing their commitment, Loco por la Aventura invested in making this educational opportunity accessible.
By helping reduce financial barriers to certification, the organization was able to provide training that many participants might not otherwise have had access to.
This investment reflects a core belief of our organization:
If we want stronger communities, we must invest in people.
Every trained volunteer strengthens our programs.
Every educated leader expands our impact.
Every certification helps create a safer and more sustainable future for outdoor recreation within our community.

Five New Certified Top Rope Guides
At the conclusion of the courses, five volunteers successfully completed all certification requirements and earned their official Top Rope Guide Certification through PCGI.
This accomplishment represents far more than a personal achievement.
These five newly certified instructors now join the growing leadership team at Loco por la Aventura and will help support future climbing programs, workshops, educational events, and outdoor experiences.
Their certification increases our organization's ability to provide safe, high-quality instruction while expanding opportunities for participants to learn from trained and qualified leaders.
In addition, these credentials provide valuable professional experience that can open doors to future opportunities in guiding, outdoor education, recreation programming, youth development, and the outdoor industry.

Raising the Standard of Outdoor Education
As Loco por la Aventura continues to grow, so does our commitment to providing high-quality educational experiences.
Over the years, our organization has offered training and educational opportunities in:
-
Rock climbing
-
Ice climbing
-
Mountaineering
-
Wilderness safety
-
Avalanche awareness
-
Camping and backpacking
-
Outdoor leadership
-
Navigation and route finding
-
Environmental stewardship
-
Technical rescue systems
The Top Rope Guide Certification Course represents another important step in our ongoing effort to elevate the quality of outdoor education available to Latino and immigrant communities.
By investing in certifications, technical training, and leadership development, we are creating pathways for individuals to become not only participants, but educators, mentors, instructors, and community leaders.

Building the Future
The impact of these certification courses extends far beyond two weekends at Canyonview Ranch Camp.
Every new instructor increases our capacity to educate.
Every trained volunteer creates opportunities for future participants.
Every leadership opportunity helps strengthen the outdoor community we are building together.
The five newly certified Top Rope Guides are not simply graduates of a course.
They represent the future of Loco por la Aventura.
They represent our commitment to excellence.
They represent our belief that education has the power to transform lives.
And they represent the next generation of leaders who will help inspire, teach, and guide others toward meaningful experiences in the outdoors.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the Professional Climbing Guides Institute (PCGI), the instructors who shared their expertise, and the 18 volunteers who dedicated themselves to this demanding and rewarding educational journey.
Together, we are doing more than creating outdoor experiences.
We are building leaders.
We are expanding access to education.
And we are creating a stronger, safer, and more empowered community for generations to come.
