From February 21 to 25, we experienced one of the most exciting trips of the year with Loco por la Aventura: our annual ice climbing class at the spectacular Ouray Ice Park in Colorado.
This year was truly special because, for the very first time, we welcomed 16 Latino and BIPOC adventurers with no prior ice climbing experience. Not only did they learn new techniques, but they also found the courage to challenge themselves on the ice.

A Life-Changing Experience
Under the expert guidance of Aníbal Rocheta (founder of Loco por la Aventura), Fernando Montilla, and Jairo Cepeda, participants learned not only the basics of climbing with crampons and ice axes, but also the importance of snow safety, essential knots, and climbing commands. Teamwork and mutual trust played a key role in the group’s success, creating a space full of unique challenges and opportunities for growth.

Learning the Basics
The Rope-De-Dope area proved to be the perfect setting for our introductory lessons. Climbers practiced essential knots such as the figure-eight and the clove hitch—both crucial for safety and efficiency. Our instructors provided hands-on demonstrations and personalized feedback, making sure everyone felt confident with their new skills.
As the day progressed, participants moved from easier routes to more complex ones, experiencing the thrill of reaching new heights. The sense of achievement was undeniable, as many successfully pushed past their limits and discovered their true potential.

A Magical Trip with Adventurers from Across the Country
One of the most remarkable aspects of this year was the diversity of our group. From Portland, Oregon, to Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Washington, and Arizona, participants traveled to join this unique adventure.
For nearly five days, we shared a house, cooked meals together, and built a family-like atmosphere. More than just a climbing course, this journey became a retreat filled with learning, personal growth, and connection with nature.

Ouray: The Switzerland of America
Nestled in a breathtaking valley surrounded by 13,000-foot peaks, Ouray is the best place in the United States to learn ice climbing. With over 200 routes for all skill levels, the Ouray Ice Park offers the perfect setting to challenge yourself and sharpen your abilities.
Plus, its proximity to town makes it easy to combine climbing with moments of relaxation and rest.

Days Full of Challenges and Learning
From day one, the excitement was undeniable. With spectacular weather and plenty of sunshine, each training session became an opportunity to overcome both personal and group challenges.
Despite the physical fatigue, every participant stayed motivated—ready to keep learning and pushing their limits.
You Could Be Part of the Next Adventure!
If this story inspired you, here’s some great news: in 2026 we’re planning two special trips to Ouray, so even more people can live this unforgettable experience.
