Community, Adventure, and Transportation Education: Our 4T Trail Experience with TriMet

ANIBAL ROCHETA |

On Saturday, May 16, Loco por la Aventura proudly hosted a unique community experience in partnership with TriMet: the 4T Trail Hiking Experience — Trail, Tram, Trolley, and Train.

This free community event combined outdoor adventure, public transportation education, and cultural inclusion into one unforgettable experience for Portland’s Latino community.

What made this experience truly special was that it became much more than a hike. Participants not only explored Portland through nature and scenic city views, but also learned how to confidently and independently navigate the city using TriMet’s transportation systems, including the MAX Light Rail, Portland Streetcar, and the Portland Aerial Tram.

A Multigenerational Latino Community Experience

One of the most inspiring aspects of the event was seeing Latino participants of all ages come together for the adventure.

Families, adults, young participants, and even children as young as 9 years old joined the experience, creating a welcoming and energetic community atmosphere throughout the day.

For many participants, this was not only their first time hiking part of Portland’s famous 4T Trail, but also their first time using Portland’s public transportation system.

Seeing entire families learning together, exploring together, and building confidence together made the experience deeply meaningful.

Two Days of Preparation, Coordination, and Community Care

Behind this experience were two full days of preparation, coordination, and community care from the Loco por la Aventura team to ensure participants had a safe, organized, educational, and welcoming adventure.

The preparation process included coordinating transportation access for every participant, making sure everyone received their TriMet tickets, and teaching participants how to activate and properly use them before the event even began.

In the days leading up to the experience, the team carefully assembled special welcome kits for participants. Each kit included educational materials in Spanish explaining how to use TriMet services, public transportation guidance, informational flyers, and resources designed to help participants feel more confident navigating Portland.

Participants also received TriMet tote bags, Loco por la Aventura reusable water bottles, snacks, bottled water, and additional educational materials prepared ahead of time so everything would be ready when participants arrived that morning.

These thoughtful details helped create a welcoming and supportive environment, especially for community members using public transportation for the very first time.

Beginning the Adventure at Loco por la Aventura Basecamp

The experience officially began at 8:00 a.m. at the Loco por la Aventura Basecamp in Portland.

From there, participants were introduced to Portland’s interconnected public transportation system through a fully guided, real-life learning experience.

The group first boarded the Portland Streetcar, an accessible and eco-friendly transportation system connecting many of Portland’s central neighborhoods and attractions.

The journey continued to the Convention Center station, where participants transferred to the MAX Blue Line heading toward the Oregon Zoo area. MAX Light Rail is one of Portland’s primary regional transportation systems, connecting communities throughout the Portland metropolitan area.

Throughout the journey, guides from Loco por la Aventura explained how to safely use the transportation system, how to read routes and schedules, how transfers work, and how affordable and reliable public transportation can be.

Exploring Portland Through Hiking and Transportation

After arriving near the zoo area, participants had time to hydrate, explore the surroundings, and prepare for the hiking portion of the experience.

The group then began hiking a section of Portland’s iconic 4T Trail route, walking through scenic forested trails that eventually led toward Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU).

During the hike, participants enjoyed breathtaking views of downtown Portland, the surrounding neighborhoods, and the city skyline.

One of the highlights of the adventure was riding the Portland Aerial Tram, which gave participants an unforgettable panoramic view of Portland from above while traveling between the South Waterfront and Marquam Hill areas.

After descending from the tram, the group continued walking together before boarding the Streetcar once again to return to the Loco por la Aventura Basecamp.

More Than a Hike: Learning How to Use TriMet

This experience became much more than an outdoor activity.

A large number of participants had never used public transportation before, making this event especially impactful for the Latino community.

Throughout the day, participants learned:

  • How to safely and confidently use TriMet services
  • How to navigate Portland using public transportation
  • How to use the TriMet and Hop Fastpass systems
  • How to create travel itineraries using transportation apps
  • How to check schedules for buses, MAX, and Streetcar services
  • How accessible, clean, affordable, and reliable public transportation can be

Participants also learned about Hop Fastpass, TriMet’s fare payment system that allows riders to easily use buses, MAX, and Streetcar services with a single card or mobile device.

Many participants were surprised by how efficient, organized, and user-friendly Portland’s transportation system could be.

For many members of the Latino community, transportation systems can sometimes feel intimidating or confusing, especially when information is not easily available in Spanish. This experience helped remove those barriers through bilingual education, hands-on practice, and a supportive group environment.

Creating Accessibility and Empowerment Through Community Education

One of the most meaningful aspects of the event was seeing Latino families and community members gain confidence while learning to navigate Portland in a completely new way.

Many participants shared that they previously felt nervous or unsure about using public transportation. By the end of the experience, participants felt empowered, informed, and excited to continue using TriMet services independently in their daily lives.

At Loco por la Aventura, we believe outdoor experiences can become powerful tools for education, inclusion, accessibility, wellbeing, and community empowerment.

This collaboration with TriMet demonstrated how transportation, outdoor recreation, and culturally inclusive education can come together to create transformative experiences for our community.

Thank You to TriMet and Our Community

We are deeply grateful to TriMet for believing in this vision and helping make this experience possible and accessible for our community.

We also thank every participant who joined us with enthusiasm, curiosity, and openness to learning something new.

Together, we continue building stronger, healthier, and more connected communities through adventure, education, and outdoor experiences.
